Hire a Dental Hygienist in Canada
Every clinic in your city is trying to hire a hygienist. The good ones are choosing between you.
Hygiene is the heartbeat of a practice, and hygienists are among the hardest hires in Canadian dentistry. We run hygienist searches the way the market works: your clinic learned first, the search built around it, and straight answers at every step. Urban or rural, coast to coast.
Mint Ops recruits registered dental hygienists for clinics across Canada for a flat fee from $2,500: 30% as a non-refundable deposit, 70% on hire.
The market
The hygienist market is a matching problem.
Registered Dental Hygienists are in demand almost everywhere in Canada. Good candidates exist, but they have options, and they evaluate your clinic the same way you're evaluating them. The clinics that win those decisions are clear about who they are, what they're looking for, and why the right hygienist would want to be there, whatever their budget.
The conventional approach (a functional job ad, a stack of resumes, a few interviews) regularly produces a hire that looked fine on paper and turned out wrong for the clinic in ways that only surfaced months later. The ad described the job. It didn't describe the clinic. And with a hygienist, the clinic is exactly what the candidate is deciding on: they'll run their own column, carry your recall program, and shape how patients feel about your practice at every visit.
The real cost of getting it wrong is the empty column while you search again, the recall program losing ground, and the patients who noticed.
In plain terms
How a good hygienist search works.
It starts before the ad. Discovery first: how your practice operates, what the team dynamic is, what happened with past hygienists, including what the mismatch was, beyond the fact that someone left. What your patients are like. What your hygiene philosophy is, even if you've never put it into words. Everything that follows is built on this, which is why skipping it is how searches fail.
Then the ad, written to reflect your clinic from the first line. The right hygienist reads it and recognizes a practice that knows what it's looking for. The wrong one self-selects out. Both outcomes are the point. Sourcing goes where hygienists are: active job seekers, and the larger group who aren't looking but would move for the right clinic. Every candidate is screened against the discovery profile as well as the job description, so you get qualified people worth your time.
Interviews get structured to surface what a resume can't, and if we have a concern about a candidate, you hear it before the offer. Then follow-through: contact with you and the hygienist in the weeks after the start date, because that's when placements take root or don't.
Run this process yourself if you have the hours. Hygienist searches in particular reward a patience most clinics cannot spare.
Urban vs rural
Two markets. Two different searches.
Hiring in the city
The candidates exist, and so does every competing offer. Urban hygienist searches are won on differentiation: compensation that reflects the current market, a schedule that respects a candidate's life, and a clinic identity specific enough to stand out from the five other ads they read this week.
The urban failure mode is being forgettable. Discovery is what fixes it: a clinic that knows what it's about writes an ad, and makes an offer, that doesn't sound like everyone else's.
Hiring in a rural community
The pool is narrower, the margin for error smaller, and the real question is whether the candidate's life works in your town. A hygienist who does well in a busy urban multi-chair practice may not be the right fit for a two-chair clinic, and the reverse is just as true.
Rural searches are won by asking the relocation and lifestyle questions (housing, family, community) early and directly. We've made these placements, and we know what makes them last.
Mint Ops has regional relationships across every province, built through our software, remote administration, and transition consulting work. Wherever your clinic is, we're not starting cold.
Best practices
What separates hygienist hires that last.
Describe the clinic as well as the role
Every ad says 'friendly team, modern office.' A hygienist choosing between three offers picks the clinic they can picture: the pace, the perio philosophy, the way hygiene is respected in the practice. Say the true, specific things.
Know your local market before you set the offer
Hygiene compensation varies sharply between markets, and candidates know their number. An offer built on what you paid three years ago costs you the best applicants before you ever meet them.
Be honest about the schedule
Evenings, Saturdays, assisted hygiene, column length: the details clinics soften in the ad are the ones that end placements in month three. The right candidate can handle the truth. The wrong one shouldn't be hired on a version of it.
Interview for chemistry with the operatory next door
A hygienist works alone in a room all day, and lives with the team between patients. Have your dentist and your senior admin meet the finalists. Clinical skill can be checked on paper. Fit has to be tested in person.
Move at the candidate's pace
Good hygienists receive offers quickly. A clinic that takes three weeks between interview and answer loses candidates it already won. Decide what fast-but-careful looks like before the search starts.
The engagement
A flat fee, a real process, and people who come from dental.
Your search is run by recruitment specialists with first-hand experience inside the profession, including Dr. Henry Lam, a practising dentist who understands the role you're hiring for from the inside, and Tatiana Cappis, who has spent over ten years placing candidates in dental practices across Canada.
Fees are flat consulting fees rather than a percentage of salary, so we have no reason to push your offer higher. And every engagement begins with a deposit, because the work that determines a search's outcome happens before the first candidate is ever contacted. You pay 30% of the fee as a non-refundable deposit when the search starts, and 70% on a successful hire. The deposit is part of the fee. We tell you what we can and can't deliver before you commit to anything.

Questions
Asked before you ask.
How much does it cost to hire a dental hygienist through Mint Ops?
Registered Dental Hygienist searches start from $2,500, as a flat consulting fee rather than a percentage of salary. Every engagement begins with a consultation where we scope the search and give you the real number before any agreement is made.
Why do you ask for a deposit?
Because contingency recruiting (no fee until placement) structurally rewards speed over care. The deposit activates the engagement immediately and funds the work that determines the outcome: the discovery, the job description, and the sourcing strategy, all done before a single candidate is contacted. The deposit is 30% of the fee and non-refundable. The remaining 70% is due when you hire.
How long does a hygienist search take?
We don't quote a turnaround. At the discovery call we'll tell you how the hygienist market looks in your area and whether the search is likely to be straightforward or difficult.
Do you place hygienists in rural communities?
Yes, coast to coast, urban and rural. Rural hygiene searches are a different kind of search: the pool is narrower and the lifestyle questions are real, so we ask candidates the relocation questions early. We know what makes those placements last, because we've made them.
What happens after the hire starts?
We stay involved. We follow up with you and the hygienist in the weeks after placement, because the transition period is when hires either take root or don't. A placement counts as a success, for your clinic and for us, only if it lasts. We don't guarantee a replacement. If a placement ends for reasons outside both sides, we'll try to accommodate you.
