MaxiDent Hardware Requirements
MaxiDent recommends that all computer systems meet the specifications below before installation. Systems that do not meet these requirements may experience reduced performance. Specifications are subject to change without notice.

Recommended workstation specifications.
Highest-usage workstations, typically the front desk, should use the higher end of these specifications: faster CPU and additional memory.
On-premise server specifications.
Windows 11 Pro is sufficient for small offices with 1 to 5 computers and can act as the server OS in that context.
Intel M, S, T, and U series processors (e.g. Core i5-1335U) are low-power designs and are not recommended for business servers or workstations.
Advertised Turbo Boost frequencies do not reflect base processor performance. Always use the base clock speed as your evaluation benchmark. Turbo Boost temporarily accelerates performance but may not be sustained under typical workloads.
Where to buy.
Computers meeting these specifications are widely available. Amazon is a convenient option. Look for systems from reputable vendors such as GMKtec, Geekom, and Bosgame, which consistently offer business-grade mini PCs and desktops at competitive price points. Workstations only. Check the processor against the list above. Not suitable as a server.

Supported operating systems.
- Windows 11 Pro: recommended for all new installations.
- Windows Server Standard 2022: recommended server OS.
- Windows Server Standard 2019: supported.
- Windows 10 Pro: end of life October 14, 2025. Microsoft no longer provides security updates for this OS. Upgrading to Windows 11 Pro is strongly recommended.
- Windows RT: not supported.
Terminal services, virtualized servers, and virtualized workstations are supported.
Running Windows via an emulator or virtual machine on a non-Windows operating system (e.g. macOS) is not recommended. MaxiDent does not support non-Windows operating systems.
Video, peripherals, and connectivity.
Video Card
Dedicated or integrated GPU supporting a minimum of 1440 × 900 resolution and 32-bit colour.
Tablet & Slate Devices
- Compatible with Windows 11 Pro.
- Subject to the same hardware specifications as laptop and desktop machines.
- Intel Atom and other low-power processors are strongly not recommended.
Miscellaneous
- Standard USB mouse and keyboard.
- Backup software is required. MaxiDent offers Cloud Backup for offices with high-speed internet, from $25/month for 5 GB plus a one-time $299 setup fee. Your account manager confirms the size you need.
Internet
High-speed internet (cable or DSL) is required for MaxiDent remote technical support and for EDI claim submission via ITRANS, Instream, or CDAnet.
Printer & Scanner
- A quality laser printer is recommended. HP and Lexmark are known to work well. Inkjet printers are not recommended and not supported.
- Scanning software must have a WIA/TWAIN driver for integration with MaxiDent Document Manager.
Network requirements and recommendations.
- Gigabit Ethernet is recommended for all clinic networks.
- Wireless networking is strongly discouraged. Wi-Fi can produce subpar performance and, in some cases, data loss in client-server communications. Wire every workstation that can be wired.
- A firewall should be placed between the network and the internet: either a standalone hardware device or one built into a network router. Keep Windows Firewall on. We add the exceptions MaxiDent and SQL Server need during installation.
- Antivirus and malware prevention software should be run on individual workstations. Windows Defender provides basic protection. For live monitoring, ransomware prevention and email security, we resell Coro. See our cybersecurity page for what it covers and what it costs.
Recommended configuration: dedicated server.
The configuration below represents the recommended client/server setup for a typical small clinic network. A dedicated server allows all workstations equal access to shared resources, including the MaxiDent MSSQL database, without competing with direct user input on the server machine.
The server should never share network functions such as domain AD controller or Exchange server, as this degrades SQL performance. Similarly, a combined workstation/server is not optimal. The operating system will always prioritize direct user input over remote workstation requests, slowing network access to shared resources.
Check your current setup with us.
Before purchasing any supplementary hardware or software, we recommend calling our team for a review of your existing or proposed system. We will confirm compatibility and make sure you are set up for optimal performance before installation begins.
